And that life could be longer too.
Going to the doctor can be a real pain, we are all a bit frightened of them aren't we. Why is it we never quite seem to get what we really want from our visits to the doctor?
Ok I admit it: You don’t wake up in the middle of night thinking: “I know I must learn how to talk to my doctor better,” but I expect you do sometimes wake up worrying about your health, or wondering how to live longer to enjoy all those dreams you do have.
But I know You have been thinking about your health.
You have haven’t you, of course you have, we all have.
What is your most precious asset?
You know all of those are so important to you,
but loosing your health will negatively impact on all of your assets.
Are you good at looking after your health?
Not as good as you would like I bet? So who should help you best to look after yourself?
Yes that is right, your doctor.
But and it is a big But, you and I know there are problems with doctors.
So what is the answer?
Well you could carry on clicking on the Internet trying to diagnose yourself, or trying to get those pills that you want or think you need.
But let’s face it: you are going to get it wrong aren’t you?!
Your health is far too important to entrust to amateurs, and as far as your health is concerned you are probably just an amateur too.
If your boiler bursts you call a plumber,
if your TV blows up it’s the TV repairer,
if the gas leaks it is the Gas Board you call,
so if you are unwell you see your doctor.
We know this is where the trouble can start, you get nervous, tongue tied, confused and wish the doctor would explain better.
Do you know what you need?
A no-

Peter Tate's The Doctor's Communication Handbook has won the Prix Prescrire 2006, the prestigious French literary award.

Accessible, direct, frequently witty, deeply humane and stripped of all condescension, this book will help them improve this.”

A "must read" simple as that!, 2 Dec 2006

I was drawn to this book having read Peter Tate's Novel called "Seasickness"
I really wanted to get more into where he had got his motivation for the book through his history of practice. I am thinking of becoming a writer myself, and wanted to research further into the adaptablity of this writer from a more theoretical background into a fictional style. Something I know a lot of authors fail at.
I found it to be another shining example of how this author manages to turn a fairly heavy subject into a far more accessable read for not only the Professionals amongst you, but the normal everyday reader as well. It is true that it is aimed more at the medical profession, but I learnt a great deal about how my doctor probably deals with me from it.
Even if you only use it as a reference guide it is a good tool to have.
I would heartedly recommend this writer to you all, a balance like this is hard to find. Well Done Peter!
All Doctors should read this book (and Nurses, Therapists, Pharmacists etc.), 14 Sep 2006

Mr. M. D. Bradbury "mazzadb" (Wales) -
This is the best place to start when reading about the consultation. It is clear,
straightforward, concise and comprehensive. You can read this in the bath or on the
train -
The reading list at the end is full of gems old and new, and it references all the classic consultation models and strategies, but is still fresh and up to date with all the latest thoughts and ideas.
This is not just for GPs, but GPs actually try to be good at talking to patients, so most will have read this. Any doctor could benefit (even ones working in a lab!) from this book, and I would heartily recommend it to all. Other healthcare workers who consult will also find it invaluable.
A Book For All Doctors, Nurses...And Patients Too, 9 May 2002
Reviewer:
M. Barrett (UK) -
This is an amazing book. Although it's written for GPs primarily, a well thumbed edition should be on every health care professional's bookshelf.
Dr. Tate understands that patient communication is the root from which all effective medical care grows. This book tells you why, and how.
If every patient read it too, they would demand this level of professional care from their own doctors, demanding of them at their consultation visit, "Have you read The Doctor's Communication Handbook?" and not accepting no for an answer.
Peter’s new books for patients could well produce the breakthrough you have been waiting for with your doctor.
At last you will be able to ask the right question and even more importantly you will find the answers much more understandable.
Your relationship with your doctor should blossom with revolutionary and incredible benefits to your most precious asset:
For a short time only, prepublication, we are offering a downloadable package of Peter’s brand new books for patients.
This is an incredible and unique opportunity to learn the secrets of the way doctors think and communicate, but more, much more than that, these books will revolutionise your ability to talk to doctors, this over time should produce phenomenally beneficial changes in your health and the health of your loved ones.
The question is: can you really afford not to read these books?
If your health is so important, and it really is: not just to you, but to those who care for you, then you have a responsibility to them as well as to you, to learn how to understand and get the best out of your doctors.
These books are full of proven techniques, tried and tested over 20 years in the training of doctors but for the very first time these trailblazing techniques are made available to you, the patient, and not just your doctor. Peter was one of a group of pioneering medical educators who pushed very hard to improve the teaching of communication to doctors, now he has done it for you, the patient.
With these books you will learn things that at present you just dont know how important it is to know, for example:
I mean are you a planner, a fatalist, or someone who thinks all health matters are for health professionals and not your responsibility?
Is it really important to know?
Oh yes it is. In fact it is critical. The sort of communication that will suite you best will depend very strongly on what sort of patient you are.
Peter will help you understand what you think about your health, he takes you step by step and there are easy to fill in questionnaires to help you understand exactly what kind of patient you are.
Did you know that the number of people who take their drugs properly is shockingly low?
Most people don’t take their tablets as their doctor recommends, this means most of us on drugs are not getting the full benefit from the medications. This is an intolerable state of affairs.
So why don’t people take their tablets correctly?
Well the answer is that either they misunderstood their doctor, or possibly there are several other important reasons why people do not follow medical advice. But the usual reason is because you do not agree in some way or other with your doctor.
And why don’t you agree?
Well because your beliefs about your health are not known by your doctor, and often those beliefs clash with your doctors medical intentions, there is a conflict of beliefs, often quite unknown to your doctor. This is not a good state of affairs. Your doctor really needs to know what you think, The Patient’s Guide really shows you how to achieve this.

And, saving the best till last, the final part of this unbeatable and invaluable package is:

This is the full version, in paperback book form this runs to round about 240 pages and is Peter’s version of his famous communication handbook for doctors now written for patients.
The Patient’s Guide is a shortened and simplified version of this.
